The Bexhill Mural Edward Wadsworth A.R.A (1889 – 1949)
The canvas hanging in the Restaurant is a copy of the original Bexhill Mural by artist Edward Wadsworth. In 1935 Wadsworth was invited by architect Serge Chermayeff to design a mural for the De La Warr Pavilion. Wadsworth based his design on a 1929 painting Shells and Cones, a highly stylised version of a sea chart of the area. Owing to his involvement in the decoration of the Cunard Liner Queen Mary, Wadsworth was unable to paint the finished mural himself. He therefore entrusted the final execution to a young artist, Charles Howard, using the study of the Bexhill Mural as his as a master copy. The mural was subsequently painted on the east wall of the restaurant, (now Gallery 1). Due to the action of light on the plastered wall the mural quickly deteriorated and was done a second time, but failed. Eventually it was copied on to canvas just after 1945, by a previous member of staff at the De La Warr Pavilion. The original study hangs in a private area of the Pavilion where the strong sunlight will not damage the painting and is lent as requested to museums and galleries.
As part of our 75th Anniversary celebrations, we are delighted to present a giclee limited edition print of Wadsworth's original study. We have worked closely with Wadsworth's grandson who has very kindly waived the copyright fee and personally approved the print. The study has been printed by the Bookroom Art Press in support of our Anniversary.
The Bexhill Mural print (limited edition of 200) is available for £175 + P&P from the De La Warr Pavilion Shop by mail order - call 01424 229 111 to purchase.
