Utopia and the Public Space

After the success of our first  Utopia project,  students from five local secondary schools explored the theme of 'Utopia and the Public Space'.  An exhibition of their work took place in various spaces throughout the Pavilion during January 2006.

As an exciting further development, this is one of a number of projects that are part of the en-quire programme, funded by the DCMS and DES.  en-quire is a new national action-research programme with the aim of exploring, assessing and articulating the special learning benefits to young people of working with contemporary art and the gallery space.

Utopia and the Public Space

A De La Warr Pavilion Project in collaboration with Hastings & St Leonards Excellence Cluster. ‘Utopia and the Public Space‘ aimed to give young people the opportunity to think critically about their hopes for social change and the influence of our environment.
Taking the utopian ideals that inspired the creation of the De La Warr Pavilion as a starting point, students from six local secondary schools explored the theme of Utopia and the Public Space and what it means to them today

Four artists, an architect and a writer worked with teachers and gifted & talented students from the local schools. The students were encouraged to ‘think outside the box‘ each group choosing a very different approach to the theme

Art & Music
Art & Music was a creative education project responding to the exhibition And our eyes scan Time at the De La Warr Pavilion from 21 January - 19 March 2006

120 students from five schools in Bexhill, Eastbourne and Brighton worked in a variety of ways inspired by the work of British abstract painters James Hugonin and Ian Stephenson.  Workshops took place in the galleries and at some schools, led by visual artists Jane Henderson and Tamsin Williams, poet Jackie Wills and music tutor Katy Debreaux.

They explored the links between visual art and music as an integral part of the exhibition, and the Art & Music project gave the young people the opportunity to be part of this. Students had created visual, written and musical responses, all of which was presented and shared at the Pavilion on the 14 March 2006.

The De La Warr Pavilion worked in partnership with the Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne, and Fabrica, Brighton on this project linking students, teachers and artists across the region.  The project was funded by en-quire, a national action research project exploring the particular benefits of gallery education for young people (see www.en-quire.org).

Art & Kids

The De La Warr Pavilion is delighted to be in partnership with the Arts & Kids Foundation on two exciting initiatives:

The Main Programme
As part of the Foundation‘s main programme we will be working with Bexhill High School over the course of the next academic year 2006-2007 to ensure that the new intake at Year 7 all have a high quality creative experience at the start of their secondary school career

Each student will have a half-day visit with artist Chris Milton to the gallery, which is then supported and with a follow up visit by Chris within the school.

The gallery visits will be spread over the year so that different students will respond to different exhibitions and feed back to each other through their course work. So far two classes have visited the Voodoo Macbeth exhibition and five classes will be visiting during the Secret Service exhibition.

We will be working with approximately 400 students and at least 10 teachers

The Great Art Quest

The Great Art Quest is the result of collaboration between The Prince of Wales Arts & Kids Foundation, Cartoon Network, six of the best UK galleries and 30 primary schools guidance. The project aimed to introduce Year 4 and 5 students and their teachers to works of art in gallery settings and to bring to life great works of art with the help of professional storytellers and artists.

Around 200 students took part in The Great Arts Quest at the De La Warr Pavilion. Studentsfrom the following five primary schools Castledown Community, Christ Church, Cuckmere House, Elphinstone Community and Glyne Gap visited the gallery for a day and worked with Artist Susan Diab and Story Teller Nana Tsiboe and produced work in response to the exhibition Mars/NY/Rome/De La Warr, 2006 by Phyllis Baldino from the Voodoo Macbeth Season (7 Oct 06 - Jan 07). The students work was exhibited at the at the De la Warr Pavilion from Thursday 2 – Mon 6 November 2006.
