A programme of creativity made possible by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation

Since reopening in October 2005 the Pavilion has been building new relationships with its audiences – providing a wide range of opportunities for people to engage with contemporary art and culture as a visitor, commentator and participant.
Young people, their families and communities are a key part of this development.
Now, thanks to a two-year grant from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation of £75,000 we are able to move into a second phase of development in our programme with young people. We will build on what we have learnt with the aim of embedding a more dynamic and inclusive approach to participation, education and learning. Working to make the De La Warr Pavilion the place for people to realise their creative potential and maximise opportunities for their social, economic and cultural development.
The main elements of the Inspire, Create, Innovate programme are:
Consultation
To be integrated more widely within the education programme and organisation with:
• Artists, through our Artists‘ Forum
• Teachers, through our Creative Teachers‘ Network
• Young people, through our Youth Forum
Project Delivery
Alongside our core offer, this programme will involve a combination of new pilot projects and embedding and building on recent work. This will include:
• A second round of our hugely successful Young Curators Programme.
• Continuing to explore how the Pavilion can be a resource for learning, leading to a ‘toolkit‘ of strategies and examples that will form an evolving resource.
• Developing the interactive aspect of our programme interpretation, working with artists-in-residence to offer different ways of engaging with exhibitions that foreground visual literacy and different learning styles. Continuing Professional Development
• Informed by our involvement in the en-quire programme (www.en-quire.org), we will use aspects of Action Research and Action Learning to guide and inform the programme. Monitoring, Evaluation and Dissemination
• We will explore new ways of evaluating what we do by working closely with an artist over the life of the programme, to create a model that can have real value for those involved and that will be an active part of the creative debate.
• A final publication will draw together all findings, discussions and further questions, and map the way forward.
The Enquiry-led Model
• All of this will be developed within an enquiry-led approach. Questioning will be at the heart of any project, foregrounding the idea of a ‘community of enquirers‘, taking a creative journey together.
• Risk and experimentation are inherent in this methodology, as is the ‘questioning the world‘ approach at the heart of much contemporary artistic practice.
The Pavilion is a place to explore, question and be inspired by the world around us, through the work of contemporary artists of international standing, here within the region. This programme aims to develop tools to engage and critique contemporary culture, and in particular contemporary visual culture, which impacts on our lives in so many ways.
