The DLWP approach...
We passionately believe that engaging with modern and contemporary arts can develop young people's ability to understand and enjoy the world around them. Contemporary art is the art of our time, with ideas that explore and critique our fast changing world. Through our Education & Learning programme we approach this work in an open way, based on enquiry and questioning, supporting children and young people to develop their own responses and find meaning that is relevant to them. Through dialogue and experiential learning, we aim to develop skills, confidence and student voice, enhancing creative teaching and learning.
Schools and colleges can engage with the De La Warr Pavilion and its programme in a variety of ways that extend and enhance teaching and learning.
The Grade One listed Pavilion is one of the country‘s finest examples of Modernist architecture and has a rich social and cultural history. A visit to the building can inspire work in all areas including Art, Design, English, Media, History, Citizenship, Geography and the Built Environment. The beautiful, light filled spaces of the Pavilion are an inspiration in themselves.
Our world class programme of contemporary arts can help to develop young people‘s engagement with and understanding of the world, as well as their creativity and creative thinking skills. We present four exhibitions per year, some with Teachers‘ Notes that are available to download from our website, and a varied live music programme.
There are three options for visiting the Pavilion:
- An independent visit
- A guided tour of the building or current exhibition
- A practical, artist-led workshop
Visits can be tailored to meet your curriculum needs and contribute to the Every Child Matters entitlement, the Cultural Offer and Learning Outside the Classroom agenda.
An artist-led session will enhance your students' engagement and creativity. These are available at a subsidised rate, and must be booked at least two weeks in advance.
Even if you're planning an independent visit, please do call and let us know to make sure we don't have too many groups at one time. We can also assist with the planning of these visits and resources can be made available for the group to use during their stay in the building.
A generic risk assessment form is available for schools to help with your preparations.
