What we thought of the evening….
With the teasing tagline ‘you never know’, Random Fridays was always going to be an interesting kind of night – but this was the appeal of it.
Held in the café/bar area on the first floor, it was a refreshing arena to enjoy music at the Pavilion. Plus free tickets were handed out to all who attended just to add to the random feel!
With a change of scene and a line-up of uber-cool performers, the purveyors of culture were treated to some unusual offerings in the form of Same Actor, T Toe and _minimalVector. Following some PIMMs on the balcony overlooking the calmest of seas, sitar player Same Actor mirrored the vibe of the early Summer evening delivering a set of chilled electro beats that carefully supported his delicate instrument.
As the evening’s darker hues descended, the crowd really did sink into the ethos of the night. With the pressure of an interval removed, we subconsciously found ourselves merging outside Gallery 2 to watch the silhouette of T Toe and his trombone positioned in front of _minimalVector’s fluid projections.
This combination was perfectly matched, a symbiotic channeling of talents that really got the crowd going. At this point, Random Fridays took on the organic nature with which it had been first positioned. While the night was a random affair from the off, the quality and atmosphere was one of precision. Sometimes the vagueness and unpredictably of an evening can result in the best of nights out – lose the preconceptions, soak up what’s presented for you and who knows, you may take-away a new artist to explore or look at a venue in a different light – two things Random Fridays certainly delivered.
