“The Fall — always different, always the same,” said John Peel. The Fall was his favourite band. Formed in early 1977, they’ve released about 50 singles, 25 studio albums, and around 50 compilation and live albums (although it seems like more). In August 2004 they recorded their 24th and sadly final John Peel Session.
The Fall are the pre-eminent live working group of the modern day, performing regularly in the UK, Europe and the USA. The Fall group has been touring and recording for 30 years. Led by the enigmatic Mark E Smith, this Manchester-based outfit offers a unique mixture of musical styles, delivered as an uncompromising and unforgettable live experience.
The Fall’s approach to music is unique, eschewing any current stylistic fads, and presenting a refreshing take on the world of music.
You will have heard The Fall already. The Vauxhall Corsa ad with that stunning guitar riff is the band’s Touch Sensitive track, and the music that introduces Final Score every week on BBC1 is from the 2004 release Theme from Sparta FC. Anyone who has watched the last ten minutes of the film Silence of the Lambs will recognise the band’s seminal track Hip Priest from the classic album Hex Enduction Hour, which provides apposite background music to the film’s finale. Their latest release Fall Heads Roll has been critically acclaimed.
The Fall have constantly changed their approach to work over their thirty year history – mining the group’s back catalogue reveals many different musicians contributing to the sound of the group. A rich history of provocative and exciting material can be drawn from the extensive back catalogue – none more so than from the phenomenal Peel Box Set which stretches across the entire timeline of the group.
Constantly refreshed with an ever changing line-up of musicians The Fall is continually re-inventing itself around the core of Mark E Smith – the band’s founder, and his partner Elena Poulou.
Universally admired by lovers of refreshing and challenging music, The Fall are recognised as one of the most influential groups of their generation.
The band are without doubt Living Legends.
