NAVIGATE Bexhill Art Trail 2013

Navigate Map

Twenty artists, from Bexhill and the local area, will be exhibiting their work in 18 shops and locations in Bexhill for two weeks as part of the Coastal Currents Arts Festival.

The work includes abstract canvases in a Record Shop, biological specimens under glass domes in the Funeral Director’s , textile installations made up of donated items in a charity shop,  and paintings and photographs about journeys and maps in a Travel Agent.

Band of Gold is a project in the foyer of the old Bexhill Cinema where artists Frances Viner and Patrick Kealey transform the space into a theatrical bridal emporium where they want to hear your wedding stories. Tell them about the big day you’re dreaming of, the best day of your life or the one that didn’t deliver. Rave or rant, they want to hear them all.  There will be performances in a Stretch Limo on October 5th, including a glass of bubbly!

Bexhill to Bexhill by Louise Kenward will map the artist’s 10 month journey (by train) to visit the other two Bexhills in the world, in Australia and Canada.  Bexhill Museum will follow her journey – the current installation maps out her research so far. www.bexhilltobexhill.com

In dedication to the unknown Little Ships of Dunkirk  will be seen on a flagpole on the seafront. Artist Jaye Ho is searching for stories of Bexhill boats and ships who took part in the evacuation of Allied Forces from Dunkirk in 1940 and will create a flag  out of  sheets  from charity shops to represent the collective charitable will found in the British people in crisis.

There are two works to be shown at the De La Warr Pavilion. Claire Whistler will produce a performance which responds to the question Do Buildings Have Memories?  Anne Parfitt will be creating sculptures out of kitsch ornaments and unfired clay in her studio – a bright pink caravan parked on the terrace.
