De La Warr Pavilion wins Own Grown Award for championing work experience for local young people
The Own Grown Award for championing work experience for local young people was given to the De La Warr Pavilion at the 1066 Business Awards Ceremony 2013.
Patricia Lochans, Director of Operations, was delighted to accept the award from Ian Noble of Business in the Community and who sits on the Own Grown board.
Patricia commented :
The Pavilion have been successfully running a student work experience and volunteer programme through our Learning & Participation Department over the last few years which has been fantastic to expand and formalise through Own Grown to help young people find and develop their careers.
We are continuing our relationship with the local Jobcentre and we have taken six different people of all ages over the past few months on their Work Experience scheme. From this we have actually been able to offer 2 of them some part-time work – and we continue to offer places to the Jobcentre.
We also arranged with the South Coast College to have some of their construction students along for practical experience in a “live” environment. We had three students here for a week in May and gave them a proper painting project to complete. They did everything from planning the job and ordering the paint to putting it on the walls – and we were very happy with the result! We will be discussing further future projects with the College.
We are delighted to be awarded the Own Grown award which acknowledges our commitment to helping young people find career opportunities in the creative industries. We remain totally committed to the scheme and look forward to offering further work experience placements to young people from the local area.
