DLWP announces new Bridget Riley exhibition for summer 2015

The De La Warr Pavilion is delighted to announce Bridget Riley’s The Curve Paintings, 1961 – 2014 as its major exhibition this summer. The show launches a year of celebrations marking 80 years of the Pavilion as one of the first and most significant Modernistpublic buildings in the UK.

Based on her use of curves in an artistic career that spans over 50 years, The Curve Painting succeeds The Stripe Paintings, the artist’s show at David Zwirner Gallery in London in 2014 that investigated the recurrent use of stripes in her work over the same period.

The Curve Paintings, 1961 – 2014 is formed of a selection of paintings, studies and drawings illustrating her close dedication to theinteraction of form and colour, and includes Rajasthan (2012), a recent wall painting.

The Curve Paintings is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published by Ridinghouse and features an interview with Bridget Riley by Lynne Cooke, art historian and senior curator, Special Projects in Modern Art, at the National Gallery Washington.

Bridget Riley

Bridget Riley was born in 1931 in London, UK, and studied at Goldsmiths College (1949–52) and Royal College of Art, London (1952–55). The artist has been exhibiting internationally since 1962 and was initially brought to prominence by the Op Art movement during the early 1960s. Notable solo exhibitions include Bridget Riley: Drawings (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1966); Bridget Riley: Works 1959–78 (touring, 1979); Bridget Riley: Paintings from the 60s and 70s(Serpentine Gallery, London, 1999); Bridget Riley (Tate Britain, London, 2003). Bridget Riley was made a CBE in 1974, appointed the Companion of Honour in 1999, and received the Kaiser Ring of the City of Goslar in 2003. Notable awards include the International Prize for Painting at Venice Biennale (1968) and the Rubens Prize of the City of Siegen (2012). The artist currently lives and works in London. Bridget Riley is represented by Karsten Schubert.
