Huge congratulations go to three of our 1066 Country member businesses. These awards bear testimony to the quality of experience and welcome that tourists can expect when they visit 1066 Country.
Small Visitor Attraction of the Year: Hastings Museum & Art Gallery; Bronze
Damian Etherington, manager of Hastings Museum & Art Gallery said: “It’s really wonderful to have been recognised in the Best Small Visitor Attraction category at the Beautiful South Awards. Like everyone, we’ve had a tough 2020-21 which has greatly affected our visitor numbers, but it’s been great to welcome visitors back when we could and engage with our volunteers and other community projects. We have also been recognised for our Hastings Digital Museum project which has received funding from the Art Fund and Lottery Funding for ongoing digital engagement activities. We saw a significant increase in visitor figures in 2019 as a result of the various events and activities we put on and we hope 2021-22 will give us a chance to build on this”.
Glamping Business of the Year:Swallowtail Hill, Beckley nr. Rye; Silver
Owner Sarah Broadbent said: “We’re thrilled to receive the Silver Award in the Glamping category for the second year in a row. The team works exceptionally hard to provide really outstanding quality glamping breaks for our guests and it’s lovely to be recognised. This one is definitely for the team who are always amazing, but have been complete superstars across the last, very challenging year! We’re looking forward to a brighter season ahead and to being able to welcome familiar faces back for holidays post lockdown, and say hello to plenty of new folk who are trying glamping for the first time”.
The Gallivant, Camber Sands came away triumphant with a massive four awards!

Everyone here works tirelessly creating happy memories for all our guests and our incredible team deserve all the recognition. To be runner up as Restaurant of the Year and Wedding Venue of the Year and to get third place for Business Events Venue is really quite humbling and just goes to show the dedication and empathy of the team and how much they want to edge towards perfection. Speechless”.
Large Visitor Attraction of the Year: De La Warr Pavilion; Highly Commended
Stewart Drew, Chair of the 1066 Country Marketing Partnership and CEO of the De La Warr Pavilion said: “It was fabulous to see our members being rewarded at these exciting tourism awards, including ourselves at the De La Warr Pavilion. They were up against stiff competition from across the South East, an area stretching from Bournemouth up to Oxfordshire and across to Kent. In what has been one of the most challenging years for us all, it’s fantastic to see 1066 members shining through and highlighting the quality and variety of what the region has to offer.”
As we emerge safely into summer 2021, please support these and all the other amazing businesses in the 1066 region.
