Artist Ryan Gander and comedian and writer Holly Walsh meet on stage for one afternoon only, in front of a live audience and a camera. Gander has spent a career making things that aren’t quite what they claim to be, and has never been especially interested in appearing as expected.
Walsh will ask the questions. Whether she gets straight answers is another matter.

Ryan Gander OBE RA (1976) has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms, ranging from sculpture, apparel and writing to architecture, painting, typefaces, publications and performance. As well as curating exhibitions, he is a committed educator, having taught at international art institutions and universities, and has written and presented television programmes on and about contemporary art and culture for the BBC.
Through associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the esoteric, the overlooked and the commonplace, Gander’s work involves a questioning of language and knowledge, as well as a reinvention of both the modes of appearance and the creation of an artwork. His work can be reminiscent of a puzzle, or a network with multiple connections and the fragments of an embedded story. It is ultimately a huge set of hidden clues to be deciphered, encouraging viewers to make their own associations and invent their own narrative in order to unravel the complexities staged by the artist.
Ryan Gander is an artist living and working in London and Suffolk. He studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, NL and the Janvan Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, NL. The artist has been a Professor of Visual Art at the Universities of Huddersfield and Suffolk and holds an honorary Doctor of the Arts at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Suffolk. In 2017 he was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary arts. In 2019 he was awarded the Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University. In 2022, he was made RA for the category of Sculpture. Since 2024, he has held the position of Professor of Perspective at the Royal Academy Schools, London, UK.
Holly Walsh is a BAFTA award winning comedian, writer, executive producer and director. Holly is co-creator, co-writer and executive producer of the BBC sitcom Motherland. In May 2022, Holly and her fellow writers won the BAFTA for Best Scripted Comedy. They have also been nominated for multiple prestigious awards for the show, including Royal Television Society Awards (2017), British Screenwriters’ Awards (2018) and International Emmy Awards (2021). Holly is also the creator, co-writer and executive producer of The Other One, which launched on BBC1 in June 2020. In addition to creating, writing and exec producing the show, Holly also directed most of the first series and all of the second series. Holly has appeared on all of the top TV British comedy shows including: Live at the Apollo (BBC2), QI (BBC2), Would I Lie To You? (BBC1), Mock The Week (BBC2) and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (C4). Before turning her hand to writing, producing and directing television, Holly performed multiple sellout solo stand up shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, securing a nomination for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards for her debut show Hollycopter.

On the night: If you have pre-booked please come to the bar to order from the gig menu and sit at one of the reserved tables.
Please be aware that we operate no re-entry for gigs. This means that once you have entered the building, you cannot go out and re-enter. This policy is in line with other major music venues across the UK and put in place on police advice. No re-entry is clearly signposted as you come through security on the front door.
There is a fenced-off area on the terrace for people who go out to smoke or vape.
There are plenty of welcoming and good value B&Bs & boutique hotels in Bexhill. The De La Warr Pavilion regularly uses the following:

Direct trains go from London Victoria, Brighton and Ashford to Bexhill.
There are also trains from London Charing Cross, changing at St. Leonards Warrior Square and from London Bridge or Charing Cross going to Battle. Battle is only a short taxi journey away (15 mins approx).

Take the M25, then A21 to Hastings. Turn off at John‘s Cross and follow the signs to Bexhill.
OR
Take the A22 to Eastbourne, go across the Bishop roundabout to the A271 and follow the signs to Bexhill and the seafront. The De La Warr Pavilion is on the Marina.
From the Brighton area:
Follow the A27 out of Brighton until you arrive in Bexhill On Sea. - Parking
Please be aware the Rother District car park outside the De La Warr Pavilion operates paid parking until 10pm. After this time parking is free.
Within the limits of this Grade One listed building, the De La Warr Pavilion strives to be fully accessible with a range of facilities to support your visit.
