Join us for a day of workshops, lectures and conversation, as we chart a course through the history of the De La Warr Pavilion, from its modernist conception through to its place as part of the community and townscape of future Bexhill.
Being Modern: Bexhill has been developed in partnership with Bexhill Talks and is the first in a series of planned talks and lectures. Bexhill Talks is a community initiative to resurrect the “Bexhill Lecture Society” which would regularly attract around 1,000 attendees between 1907 and 1967.
WHAT’S ON
Programme of Talks (11am – 4.30pm)
Flagship architecture lectures with leading architects and historians reflecting on modernist ideals and how these continue to shape and inspire their work and our communities today.
Behind the Scenes Architectural Tour (1.30pm – 2.30pm)
Discover hidden areas of the De La Warr Pavilion in this exclusive tour, which takes you into private spaces in the building, not open to the public and offers fresh insights into the history, design and significance of the building.
Building Modern (10am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 4pm)
A creative model-making workshop for ages 5 and up, inviting children and adults alike to explore the principles of design and architecture through playful, hands-on making. Guided by specialist architectural modelmakers, participants will learn how to design and build a scale model of a modernist seafront building using recycled and craft materials.
Remembering Modern – The Living Archive (all day)
DLWP is more than concrete and steel. It is made of ideas, memories and the people who pass through it. Browse an exhibition of historic photographs, drawings and archival documents charting the creation of the De La Warr Pavilion, alongside plans for its future refurbishment. Then become part of the story, record a memory for our Oral History Project. Help preserve the experiences that continue to shape this remarkable building.
Ask an Architect (1pm – 2.30pm) Drop-in session
How do buildings begin? What makes a great architect? Does it really take 7 years of study to become an architect? What is a typical day like? Whatever you have wanted to know about a career in architecture here’s your chance to ask! Meet practising architects for one-to-one conversations about careers, creativity, training and life in the profession.
Making Modern (12pm – 2.30pm, in the studio)
Art Sundays makes a guest appearance at Being Modern! Take inspiration from architecture and design in this free creative workshop for all ages.
