The Sensual Nature of Sound portrays the musical lives of these New York based composer/performers. Although all four women are pioneers in American music, each composer pursues a distinct direction of her own. Since the early 1980s, Laurie Anderson has used music and performance as the foundation for her multi-media stage shows which have since become her trademark. Cuban born Tania Leon composes orchestral music that is an intricate weave of Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz elements embedded within a classical Western concerto format. Meredith Monk experiments with new ideas in music theatre and has developed a genre of opera very much her own. Pauline Oliveros draws upon the rich resources of ritual, myth, meditation, and improvisation to create a body of work that is truly visionary. Filmed at rehearsals and performances in the United States and abroad, The Sensual Nature of Sound examines the contributions of these diverse composers to contemporary American music.
At the end of 2016 Ingrid traveled to New York to study directly with Meredith Monk. Taut is a collaborative project exploring a tension between notated sound and performed sound, in response to Monk’s reluctance to score her work which she considers an oral tradition. Ingrid asked composers and music makers to write a score specifically for herself, for interpretation using voice, percussion and electronics to perform and record on an album this spring. Essentially her work over the past year is trying to precariously balance juxtapositions of conceptual sound (heard in the mind) and real, experienced sound. With the voice as a primary instrument, this process taps into themes of identity, vulnerability and both internal and external dialogue.
Daniel W J Mackenzie is a musician, sonic artist and curator of (primarily) music, sound art and film who organises events alone and with various groups including Lost Property, a collective he co-founded. He has performed and exhibited internationally, most recently in Oslo, Berlin and Cape Town. Daniel is increasingly influenced by the globalisation of sound and the role it plays in forging connections, sharing environments and transporting listeners.
New, edgy and sometimes completely random cutting-edge eclectic live performances from live music and art to the more diverse artistic practices delivered to you by local and international artists as well as works from students at the University of Brighton.
