The Weather Station is the musical vehicle for Toronto artist Tamara Lindeman.

Her third and finest album yet, and her first for Paradise of Bachelors, Loyalty was recorded at La Frette Studios in France in the winter of 2014 with Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas) and Robbie Lackritz (Feist). The record crystallizes her lapidary songcraft into eleven emotionally charged vignettes and intimate portraits, redolent of fellow Canadians Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and David Wiffen, but utterly her own.

All Of It Was Mine (2011), released on Canadian label You’ve Changed Records, found admirers around the world among both audiences and critics. Lindeman toured as a handpicked opener for Bahamas, Basia Bulat, Jason Collett, and Siskiyou, playing shows and festivals across both North America and Japan. She has also been in demand as collaborator, appearing on records by Doug Paisley, Field Report, Will Stratton, Siskiyou, and Daniel Romano, among others. Her series of recorded duets with Toronto-area songwriters was nominated for the 2013 SOCAN songwriting prize. The Weather Station’s acclaimed 2014 EP What Am I Going to Do With Everything I Know features contributions by members of Hiss Golden Messenger and Megafaun.

Though she is an extraordinary singer and instrumentalist, Lindeman has always been a songwriter’s songwriter, earning accolades for her delicate, carefully worded verse, filled with double meanings, ambiguities, and complex metaphors. Outside her musical practice, she also happens to be an accomplished film and television actor, but it’s her directorial eye for quietly compelling characters and the rich details of the everyday, Bressonian in its specificity and scope, that drives the limpid singularity of The Weather Station’s songs.

“Built from blocks of bluegrass, British balladry, and country sadness … Lindeman’s voice flits and cracks, peaks and valleys, comforts and cries … clenching truth like a catch in the throat. She possesses the unwavering patience of Bill Callahan’s later records, delivering every word and worry like she’s pondered it all into acceptance. For songs so intimate, and performances so inward, such careful singularity feels like a remarkable feat.”Grayson Haver Currin (Pitchfork)

SUPPORT ACT:  KRISTIN MCCLEMENT

Kristin’s music is born of two separate worlds; the vast shape shifting landscape of her childhood South Africa engraved with the melancholic romance of old England’s sacred woodland, rivers and valleys.

Her debut album The Wild Grips was released in February 2015 via Brighton based independent label Willkommen Records.

The Wild Grips refers to our wild nature and Kristin’s reaction to it as a songwriter. Hidden behind the glance of every stranger lies the struggle to make sense of these troubling times. “What can we pull from the rubble of our modern world?” she asks. Her songs invoke a sense that there must be something more meaningful beyond the windows of our offices, shopping centres and rented houses.

Produced by Christian Hardy of The Leisure Society, The Wild Grips is a wide-eyed rendering of modern folk song where the acoustic and the electronic rub alongside. Whilst making the album, Kristin and the band were influenced as much by artists like P J Harvey and Portishead as they were by the ‘pure’ sounds of Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen.

Essentially a collection of personal ballads, the songs connect closest with an audience already familiar with the history of alternative folk music but will hopefully ignite a broader appeal thanks to their powerful and thoughtful delivery.

Kristin’s live performances are accompanied by Jools Owen on drums, harmonium, trumpet and backing vocals. She has toured throughout the UK, Italy, France, Portugal and Germany, sharingstages with Benjamin Clementine, Laura Marling, Jessica Pratt and Sam Lee, to name just a few.

“The Wild Grips is an extraordinary collection of mournful yet beautifully crafted and poetic songs, with McClement’s deep resonant voice dominant throughout.” – Brighton Music Blog

“A debut album of gravitas and maturity which should secure her reputation as a songwriter and musician of depth and character.” – For Folks Sake

“Inventive, weighty pop music which dazzles, shimmers and glows exquisitely in the cold light of the day.” – Gold Flake Paint

Gary Numan

SOLD OUT

“There are still people trying to work out what a genius Gary Numan is.” Prince

“I was always impressed by the way Gary Numan found his own voice–and it was unusual–but it was unmistakenly him and boldly him. I see me doing what I learned from him.” Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails

The influence of Electronic and industrial music pioneer Gary Numan has been recognized by a diverse array of the world’s greatest artists—from Prince to Lady Gaga, Jack White to Kanye West; Beck to Queens Of The Stone Age, and The Foo Fighters to Nine Inch Nails, many of which have collaborated with Numan and covered or sampled tracks from his vast back catalogue. While Numan’s unique, pioneering style
continues to connect he has never stopped innovating and his latest album, ‘Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)’, is evidence of this desire to never standstill with the album marking Numan’s return to the UK Top 20 Albums Chart and Billboard 200 for the first time in over 30 years. The subsequent Splinter World Tour took in more countries and dates than any Numan tour since 1981 and ended with his biggest headline show in over 30 years at the legendary Hammersmith Apollo in London.

Numan’s first full-length studio album since 2006, ‘Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)’ sees the Award winning electro-pioneer team-up with Nine Inch Nails guitarist Robin Finck and producing partner Ade Fenton to unleash his heaviest and most accomplished album to date. Whilst writing and recording of ‘Splinter’ Numan has toured extensively, including marking the 30th anniversary of the classic and hugely
influential ‘Pleasure Principle’ with a tour and he was personally invited by super-fan Trent Reznor to join Nine Inch Nails during their set to perform several of his own songs including ‘Cars’ and ‘Metal’, which NIN had previously covered, on the band’s 2009 ‘Wave Goodbye’ tour.
Numan also co-wrote the Battles single ‘My Machines’, and
his music continued to stay in the spotlight thanks to bands such as Jack White’s The Dead Weather covering the classic ‘Are ‘Friends’ Electric?’.

Numan’s permanent relocation to the US at the end of 2012 reinvigorated his creativity and had an immediate positive effect, with ‘Splinter (Songs From A Broken Mind)’ eventually being finished in his LA studio at the start of 2013. Numan’s unique vocal style evokes a feeling of machinery and icy alienation whilst provoking strong emotions within the electronic noise of classic albums such as ‘The Pleasure Principle’ and ‘Telekon’ that connects with his loyal and ever-growing fan base of self-proclaimed Numanoids.

Father John Misty + support

“It wows the listener outright, swerving confidently around genres and eras, piano balladry and perverse synths, throwing in grandiose string arrangements and enough lyrical grist to keep listeners milling well into 2015.” Kitty Empire, The Observer

“It’s hard to tell where Joshua Tillman ends and his alias Father John Misty begins – but perhaps it doesn’t matter when the songs sound this good” Alexis Petridis, the Guardian

Father John Misty on I Love You, Honeybear:

“There’s a case to be made that it sounds and acts a bit like Scott Walker, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, and Dory Previn. Blammo. The songs are a narration of my experience falling in love, which means different things to different people, but which I found incredibly inspiring, personally and creatively …

This is a fairly experimental record, in that, I “experimented” with several different approaches for each song (which is part of why it took so long to record) even though the arrangements and styling are fairly classic. Taking a larger producer role this time around gave me license to indulge no small degree of ambivalence and uncertainty. This material demanded from me a new way of being made, and it took a lot of time before that revealed itself. I believe we found a way to make something that is meticulous but natural, dense but still sounds spacious.”

“Oh, the songwriting! Every arrangement is perfect for the melody, and every melody sticks: together they’re perfect. 5/5” The Guardian

Legendary and Internationally renowned musician, writer, activist, performer, visual artist and icon, Patti Smith makes a rare 2011 UK appearance at the De La Warr Pavilion.

In an intimate evening of spoken word and music, Patti Smith will also be joined on stage by her daughter Jesse.

Pattti Smith’s career spans 40 years from when she arose as a highly influential member of the US punk rock scene in th 1970s. Along with the highly innovative and influential group Television, the trio opened up a restricted music scene that centered around CBGBs in New York City.

Fusing punk rock and spoken word poetry, Patti Smith’s 1975 debut album Horses is often cited as one of the greatest albums in music history and a major landmark of the New York Punk scene. Talking of the album, Allmusic’s William Ruhlman said that it “isn’t hard to make the case for Patti Smith as a punk rock progenitor based on Horses” while REM’s Michael Stipe says it “tore my limbs off and put them back on in a whole different order.” In the same year of its release, Patti Smith was awarded the Academie Charles Cros, Grand Pris du Disque Award in France for the recording of Horses. The cover photo, taken by artist Robert Mapplethorpe was to become one of rock music’s most iconic images.

Smith has just won the National Book Award for her book Just Kids, which tells of her growth as an artist and her friendship with Mapplethorpe when she first arrived in New York in the 60s.
